S.E. Asia - Saigon & The Mekong Delta

Home World Tour Index S.E. Asia - Index

On the 2nd January we started our 2 day mission to get across the border to Ho Chi Minh City (better known as Saigon) - I take back everything I said about Cambodian drivers - they are nothing compared to Vietnam drivers - it's like a race going all directions featuring 100's of bikes - crossing the road is now more of an extreme sport than a regular activity - I look forward to bracing myself a lot over the next few weeks.

Talking of crazy, this morning we went on a trip to see some tunnels used by the Vietnam soldiers during the war with America - the tour guide was suffering from mania of the highest level - shouting & all sorts - very funny - but not exactly what is expected from a professional guide. This afternoon we witnessed the horrors of that said war and the long tem effects of the poison gas America used on the people here. A rather depressing day.

Before we left Saigon we did a day trip on the Mekong River - it was excellent - small boats, big boats, bicycles, good food and some wildlife.

Here at the age of 26 I finally got a snake put around me - rather slimy and very strong - glad to get it off....then the guide asked if we wanted to put our hand in a bees nest and get some honey....people were less keen on this than the snake....strange.
