The Road to Salisbury     Home A Pilgrim?

From Winchester to Salisbury was undertaken with gale force winds & rain in a one day  ( 26 miles, not to be recommended) in March as part of a trip from Winchester to Corfe Castle in Dorset. The long journey in the CWR ( cold, wind and rain) was so impressive that I only took one picture.
 on the route.

I returned to Salisbury Cathedral the following year, to give it more than a cursory glace in the howling wind. Like Winchester it is a beautiful place. One of the most striking features were two small ones. The first a modern font that was designed to reflect the roof, the second was the list of Deans that go back to 1091... The wonderful names like William de Wenda in 1220, by the 15c they become boring until you reach 2004...June Osborne ... a woman. Anyone looking at that board must realise the hundreds of years it has taken to get Women to their true place in the Church... however we have still to elect a female Bishop. Presumably the Church of England will not take a further 1000 years to achieve this little step.
