Rome - Art Home Rome Index

What is good art?... I have come to the smug conclusion 'It is what ever I think I like at the time'. This view might be a tad controversial as my knowledge (not to mention ability to produce the stuff) is not in the top echelons of world thinking...but who cares.

Here is a sample of some of the work I observed and was able to photograph in Rome. My favourites were all modern >>> the graffiti and the stations of the cross from the church of St Nicola (incidentally a church built on & using the pillars of pagan temples ).

At the other end of the scale is the bit on the left, it is from the outside of the 'Church of the Dead', OK I suppose in its context, but not something I would want to live with.

One of the most striking recurring themes was the richness of the church ceilings, all gems of quality and over the top style. In summary Rome has a huge range of style, quality and quantity>>>  mostly a pleasure to look at.

There was also an accidental bit of 'installation' art that caught my eye >>> the 'flotsam and jetsam' riding up in the river waterfall. (If you doubt this fits  the definition of 'good art' please look at my statement at the top of the page.)
