The North Downs Way is boring unless you are big into trees>>>and frequent motorways, but by completing circular walks I was able to enjoy a big variety of scenery, towns and villages. As well as little surprises; like a modern stone circle, erected to celebrate the millennium, a burial mound from 3BC, Denbies, the largest independent vineyard in Europe, Chartwell Churchills home and Trottiscliffe church that sold tasty home made preserves. |

On the last walk to Rochester I found a Baptist Church made out of corrugated iron sheet complete with gothic style stain glass windows>>> still had the same purpose as the Cathedral. After a bit of scrabbling about to cross the Medway bridge, I arrived at Rochester, first visiting the 12C Castle, and the Guildhall Museum. The latter putting on a display of life on the 'Hulks' kept in the Medway. A great bacon sarny was taken in an interesting cafe, come adventure travel shop. The Cathedral is what you might call an intimate little affair. A very colourful organ dominating the middle, with lots of interesting 'corners'. The place would get on my list of 'worth a detour' if not a special journey.>>> A good end to a long journey ...in time that is. |

Footnote...As I left Rochester & walked over the bridge to Strood station, there was a Russian submarine lying redundant amongst the barges, I suppose it makes a change from plastic gin palaces. |
