Starting from St Andrew's church in Farnham .I walked The North Downs Way to Guildford. I have my own views on Guildford cathedral, but later on I passed Battersea Power Station and I could not help but wonder if the architects are related. I then followed the River Wey ...where the national Trust are doing a good job in conserving the immediate area...to the Thames and on to Thames Ditton>>> Where I left the Thames and had a great days walking through Richmond park, Kings Road and Chelsea. The last miles were undertaken from Waterloo station to St Paul's & on to Southwark....not a long journey. Since the original walk I have repeated many of the interesting bits in London. |

Southwark is a monument to enlightened modern expansion, the latest alterations sharing the same architect as Farnham St Andrew's, not to mention the BBC program 'Restoration', Ptolemy Dean. However it it is very difficult to get a good view of the outside of the Cathedral in one lump. The refectory serves good food for an almost reasonable price. St Paul's speaks for itself as a magnificent bit of architecture, very different from other Cathedrals because of it's build date. The crypt is a memorial to British military triumphs such as Trafalgar with the burial places of Nelson. The two bits of art that stand out in the main body are the Holman Hunt Light of the world & The Henry Moore 'Mother & Child' . Sadly it is over run with tourists & feels more like a museum until you take part in a service. |
