The monument to the US Marines is on the edge of  Arlington, its fascinating to see a monument taken from such an iconic photograph. The cemetery is very impressive & the people that run it do a good job of providing a 'tourist' site along with a national cemetery, that is also a monument to those buried there.
It is easy to forget that 10 to 20 burials take place every day, as well as casualties of current conflicts,  service veterans have the right to be buried at Arlington if they so wish. It must take some juggling to keep the grieving & tourists apart.

The list of 'monuments' & graves is an impressive reminder of the nations sacrifice. Besides the tombs to the unknown soldiers from the first, second & Korean war, there is the resting places of the two Kennedy brothers; Robert Kennedy had  requested a small simple cross, which is very effective amongst all the grandeur.

The graveyard was originally started in the grounds of Robert E Lee's house as a way of getting back at him for choosing the wrong side. There is also a small museum in the house, which is kept as it was when Lee lived there. The view from the house over the capital is spectacular.
